After finishing graduate work in biochemistry at Purdue University, Feinler worked on nutritional supplements for victims of phenylketonuria. In 1958 she joined the Chemical abstracts Service where she edited for their index.
In 1972, she joined Dr. Douglas Engelbart’s Augmentation Research Center, which began her career on the Internet. She pioneered and managed all of the networks above in chronological order. These networks were the forerunners to today's internet as we know it.
Became director of the Network Information Systems Center at SRI International from 1985 to her retirement from the SRI in 1985. Feinler and colleagues developed many internet servers such as yellow and white pages as well as the WHOIS server. From 1972 to 1989, they managed the Host Naming Registry for the Internet and developed naming schemes such as .com, .edu, .gov, .mil, .org and .net. Feinler really was a pioneer. Her group also managed the first Internet audit trail and billing system for the DoD and developed PCSam which retrieved email from servers and downloaded them to personal computers. There wouldn't be email without Feinler
